Jonathan Bartell is a young man, just out of university, when he signs up for the position of Quarantine Officer at the Orbital Launch Station.

He is part of a crop of students who flocked to study exo-biology when bacteria were discovered on Mars, and who are now all making their living flipping burgers, because the jobs are few and hard to get.

He is lucky to get a job in space, no matter how mundane.

Or so he thinks...

Gaby Larsen is a doctor at the tiny hospital at the space station, and she keeps secrets, not because she wants to keep them, but because she is too scared to share them.

Because out in space, your worst enemies are your fellow travellers.

Contamination Space Agent Jonathan Bartell Book 1 eBook Patty Jansen

When Johnathan Bartell gets a job on the orbital space station he is hoping he will get to use his skills in exobiology. He is bitterly disappointed to discover that his job in quarantine is to simply ensure the checklist form has been filled in. Things become interesting when he refuses to clear a military spaceship after it fails to meet the criteria for clearance. People in high places become angry at the red tape, but there is something deeper going on and the threat of contamination is very real.

Containment is only a novella which rumbles along. It however lacked depth in its plot and science detail and generally lacked description of the settings. For example, no views of Earth or the moon from space and few descriptions of the spaceships inside or out. There was also nothing unique in the orbital space station’s culture that would attract the interest of SciFi readers. This resulted in a very simplistic story, which I found a little disappointing. The characters were also not overly developed and so the interaction between them at times was quite two-dimensional lacking emotional depth and connection to the reader. On the plus side, the story did have tension and drama and an unexpected twist, along with a hint of a future romance. But we’ll have to wait and see. Overall, I had no difficulty reading the book and I won’t hesitate to purchase the sequel when it comes out.

Contamination Space Agent Jonathan Bartell Book 1 eBook Patty Jansen Reviews

I very much like Patty Jansen’s writing in general and this book is no exception. The story is well written and generally well developped. The dialogues are solid and natural. I could not put the book down and had to read it through in a single day (through a good part of the night, sigh). It is also nice to see that Patty Jansen does keep up on current science issues - I liked the mention of tardigrades. The ending was surprising and I wish that the book had been longer. I don’t think that her space station design with the docking of ships at the rotating ring could stand up in reality and there are a few loose ends that would have rounded the book up if covered (sorry, no spoilers from me!) - but these matters did not diminish my reading pleasure. If I could, I’d give the book only 4.5 stars because of the mentioned issues, but 4 stars would be too low. I got Contamination free from the author, but this is an independant and voluntary review.
I received an Advance Reader Copy, but this in no way influenced my review

This book was pretty good for the beginning of a series, though I wouldn't have minded it being a bit more fleshed out because the story line felt very rushed to me. Besides that I didn't really warm up to the main character much, it seemed like he had a huge chip on his shoulder plus a major case of holier-than-thou. I've enjoyed Ms. Jansen's other series' more because I really felt like I got to know the characters, I wanted to learn even more and hoped for good things for them. But Jonathan might chill some now that his life is changing again due to his actions at the end of the book.

There were a few twists that I wasn't expecting and besides finding out what happens next for Jonathan and Gaby I really want to know what's up with the mysterious objects that may or may not be heading towards Earth. Seems like a lot could be coming concerning if the military is on the up and up, so I'm giving Ms. Jansen the benefit of the doubt and hoping that the next book in the series fills in more about the characters and fleshes the story line out more.
This is a very short novella and for such a few pages to expensive.
The characters are wooden and I would understand it if this were the first work of a new author,
but it isn't.
A good hard science novella in the early days of human planetary exploration.
Very soft and fast paced novel, I found a little naive and simple
Nice idea. Creepy!! Makes you wonder how much stuff could get by you if you don't pay attention, or stick to your guns/principles!! (TSA, are you listening?)
This was a great new series from Patty. The beginning of the book was a little slow for me but the middle to the end fleshed out the story. It was was rather short but that was OK. I will be waiting for the next book to see how things pan out.
